Melting Borders is a performance/action that symbolically melts the flags of the countries where it’s performed in. Often performed in border towns where two or more flags are melted away, and the melted colored ice cream stains the shirt the performer is wearing. The result is the new flag, as the artist calls it: “The Sweet Flag”; a flag that merges countries together, abstracting what we identify as a political flag, and deconstructing the idea of a Nation. Going back to the source of equality.With this action the artist wanted to symbolically melt the borders away, leaving only the sweetness and the beauty of humanity, what links us and not what keeps us apart. The shirt is what remains of the action and all the shirts remain as relic artwork for Matlakas’ performance exhibitions and retrospectives. The first “Melting Borders” happened in Armenia and later in many other countries:South and North Korean Border (DMZ area) in occasion of PyeongChang Culture Olympics Armenia, UK, Italy, and Bulgaria melting the flags of Bulgaria, Macedonian, Greek, and European Union (Highlighting the “Macedonian Question”), Ukraine, Jordan, Poland, and more. This time was the turn of the border between the USA and Mexico.
Melting Borders è una performance/azione che scioglie simbolicamente le bandiere dei paesi in cui viene eseguita. Spesso eseguita in città di confine dove due o più bandiere vengono sciolte e il gelato colorato sciolto macchia la maglietta che indossa l’esecutore. Il risultato è la nuova bandiera, come la chiama l’artista: “The Sweet Flag”; una bandiera che unisce i paesi, astraendo ciò che identifichiamo come bandiera politica e decostruendo l’idea di una nazione. Tornando alla fonte dell’uguaglianza.
Con questa azione l’artista ha voluto sciogliere simbolicamente i confini, lasciando solo la dolcezza e la bellezza dell’umanità, ciò che ci lega e non ciò che ci separa. La maglietta è ciò che resta dell’azione e tutte le magliette rimangono come opere d’arte reliquia per le esibizioni e le retrospettive di Matlakas. Il primo “Melting Borders” è avvenuto in Armenia e successivamente in molti altri paesi:
Confine sudcoreano e nordcoreano (zona DMZ) in occasione delle Olimpiadi della cultura di PyeongChang Armenia, Regno Unito, Italia e Bulgaria sciolgono le bandiere di Bulgaria, Macedonia, Grecia e Unione Europea (evidenziando la “questione macedone”), Ucraina, Giordania, Polonia , e altro ancora. Questa volta è stata la volta del confine tra USA e Messico.
